The Story of Her Life
Suzanne used to dream about a life of perfect happiness
When her time came
But now she spends her days on the floor with a boy
Who barely knows her name
She used to laugh, but that was long ago
When the world was young and every door she passed was open wide
Now she stares through broken windows and thinks about the story of her life
She had dreams of goin’ places
Far beyond the shadow of this lonely town
Put herself through college, work up to the top then maybe settle down
Now every twist and turn that led her to this madness
Keeps on turning over and over in her mind
She planned it all so perfectly. How could this be the story of her life?
Endless strings of doctors, lawyers, nurses and teachers now walk through her door
Tell her that there’s nothing they can do, cash their checks and then return no more
She used to cry, a river of tears
But what good are tears when no one’s there to hold you till they’re dry
And she tries to hide her anger, as she thinks about the story of her life
All the choices that she made, keep coming back to haunt her
And life goes on
But all that she can do is watch it move on past like a parade
And as the music fades
The streets all look so empty. Where did everybody go?
Suzanne pours some coffee, sits down in the kitchen as the daylight fades
And as her boy lies sleeping, she stares into the evening and goes far away
Flying over long forgotten places in the long forgotten spaces
Of the life she’s left behind
And she thinks about tomorrow, and knows that she is stronger
It will not be easy, but she’ll try
To write a happy ending to the story of her life
